Jat Airways and Civil Aviation 80th Anniversary Celebration

On June 17, 2007, Jat Airways celebrated eight decades of civil aviation in Serbia.

As successor to "Aeroput", the first Society for Air Traffic in our country and later of the Yugoslav Airlines, Jat held the celebration at the National Theater in Belgrade with distinguished guests and company employees attending. According to a script of Miloš Rajković, supported by Braca Petković as director and dramaturge and stage designer Miloš Vuksanović, the Serbian national carrier presented five thematic wholes, portraying the emergence, development, endurance and future of our civil aviation.

Through dialogue between Prince Pavle, who initiated the idea about the need for developing aviation in Serbia, and Tadija Sondermajer, Aeroklub vice-president, pilot and engineer and first "Aeroput" director, the first act portrayed the initial steps of aviation in Serbia. Together with narrator Goran Sultanović, the roles were played by Tihomir Stanić and Nenad Jezdić.

In the second act, Belgrade's "Big Band" jazz orchestra in Jat pilot uniforms played Glenn Miller's five legendary compositions that marked the 20th century as aviation advent age, as documentary photographs and films depicting Yugoslav Airlines history were shown on the large screen.

Photographs of cabin personnel and contented passengers permeated the third act in which could be heard Radoslav Grajić's composition "The Stewardess", which won first prize at the "Belgrade Spring" music festival in 1963, precisely the year when JAT introduced the then latest airplane model, the famous Caravelle.

The fourth act offered two scenes from the National Theater's ballet performance "Who's That Singing Over There", after the play of our greatest contemporary playwright Dušan Kovačević and to the music of Vojislav Kostić and choreography of Staša Zurovac.

In the fifth segment, as the narrator withdrew, on the screen that was set on the stage unfolded the latest Jat Airways advertisement with Serbia's celebrities from the world of sport, art, entertainment: Vlade Divac, Nikola Kojo, Zdravko Čolić, Zoran Cvijanović, Ana Ivanović, Jelena Janković...

The "JAT" Sport Society also marked the 80th anniversary of JAT and our civil aviation by holding the traditional field day at Ada Ciganlija.
