Behind the Camera

As part of the celebration on the occasion of Jat Airways’ 85th anniversary, the national airline’s marketing department organized an exhibition of photographs by Jat New Review’s photography editor, Milan Melka from 26 June to 8 July at the Belgrade gallery Ozon.

By Vanja Savić

Passengers have been looking at his photographs on the pages of Jat New Review for the past twenty years. His published photographs, in addition to depicting Jat aircraft and the airline’s staff, tourist landmarks in Serbia and various Jat Airways destinations, tell stories of the identity and character of the portrayed public figures and other interesting individuals and motifs captured by his camera, primarily for reasons of business. The photographs which have not been published show even more. Because, as Milan Melka says, a special part of the exhibition is formed by photographs created as a part of his personal, perhaps artistic observation of the motifs, which are rarely included in any publication, be it an inflight magazine or not.

For that very reason and on the occasion of Jat Airway’s 85th anniversary, the airline’s Marketing Department, wishing to show one of the less known aspects of the airline’s business, organized an exhibition of Milan Melka’s photographs at the Belgrade gallery Ozon. Visitors to the gallery will be able to see something that Jat Airways’ passengers still have not seen. Pure photographs, unhampered by text, columns or other parts of the magazine that published them, resulting from the fusion of the journalist and the artist in the person holding the camera.

According to Jat Airways Marketing Director, Jasmina Milošević, Milan Melka’s exhibition is only one of the events that will mark Jat Airways’ jubilee:

– The exhibition of Milan Milka speaks for itself because these are photographs by a photographer who is known in Belgrade’s journalist and photography world. I think this is a good way to present, through a slightly different approach, Milan Melka and his work. Needless to say, Jat Airways will organize other interesting events to mark this jubilee which few airlines in European and the world can match.
